‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a loving portrait of an elderly Turkish couple who live in the Dutch city of Enschede. The love between this couple is indestructible. Even Alzheimer’s disease, which is taking it’s toll on the wife by erasing much of her memory, is not strong enough to erase this love. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is, besides being a short documentary about love and parting, also an ode to women.
Cemal Dogan, a former textile worker from Enschede, has committed his life to taking care of his wife and ensuring that she is able to smile every day. He is 73 years old and the task of caring for her is extremely difficult. However, he is determined… After all, his wife has cared for him for the past 48 years and has given him 5 children. Now it’s his turn to care for her. And he does this with complete and unselfish devotion.
He helps her to wash and dress every morning and “pretty’s” her hair. He walks with her and takes her swimming. He also washes her and cooks her favourite Turkish recipes, something which has not proved easy. After all, when his wife was in good health, he hardly ever set foot in the kitchen. Now he feels he must.
The couple have worked very hard in factories their whole lives and have always lived a frugal life. They saved for a good life after their retirement. That his wife cannot enjoy this is a very sad thing for him. He has always dreamed of a happy, healthy retirement. They would live life to the full, travelling and doing things together. But this cruel illness has taken hold of her much too early. Still, as long as he lives, he has made it his life’s work to make sure she smiles every day! Because, when she laughs, he is happy. When she smiles, the World is a beautiful place….
The short documentary ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was made for the programme Vals Plat by the Dutch broadcasting company NPS.
